We are just a few everyday midwestern American people: teachers, administrators, doctors, workers, and Christians. We're just on a mission.

A few years ago, the people of Sudan were brought to the attention of one Midwestern pastor, and God convinced him to go to Sudan, to learn about thier culture and tell them about Christ. On his first solo expedition into the heart of the country, over 7,000 people heard the gospel and responded by being baptized.

Now, it's time to go back, to prepare for a second mission, and the vision God has given us is so much bigger.

Find out who we are, what we want to do for the Sudanese people, and how you can help.

Why Africa?

Africa is in a critical time of its existence.

Consider this:

Africa has the world’s biggest population of people who have yet to hear of Jesus Christ. Africa is quickly moving out of the age of paganism and animism in favor of the major world religions. That sounds promising, but Africans will not automatically become Christians. Islam is the fastest spreading religion in the world today. By 2050, Europe will be at least 25% Muslim, with just a tiny population of Christians. The Muslim influence is pouring into Africa through Egypt, Libya and the other northern nations at an astounding rate. In a generation, Africa could look like the Middle East in culture and worldview.
Africa is a continent prized for it’s natural and human resources. It's a seedbed of violence, dictatorship and conflict as people attempt to industrialize and Westernize their societies. We believe the most ethical action we can take is to bring the gospel to Africa today. A transformation of African hearts for Christ, while preserving their cultural beauty will save Africa from the myriad of destructive forces that descend upon it. Bringing people education will prepare them to determine their own futures and live peacefully, rather than live under brutal regimes.

In a generation or two, Africa will look very different. It will be a much more modern place with a huge population, engaged in the world. We hope it will be a place that preserves its beautiful mosaic of cultures while people solve the problems that have plagued Africa for centuries. Its religious culture will have matured to the point that churches are ready to send their own missionaries, to Europe, maybe even the United States.

We have a choice: will those missionaries who come over be Christian, or Muslim? Will Africa be the new center of the Christian world, or the Muslim world? It will be one or the other. We have to decide which it will be with the actions we take today.

We believe for the sake of the souls in Africa, as well as their civilizations and cultures, the time is now to act to save a critically important people not only from starvation and war, but bring to them the only one that can truly save their souls, Jesus Christ.

The Mission

Save Africa is on a mission - to bring to gospel of Jesus Christ to thousands of people in Sudan and surrounding countries.

The mission began a few years ago with an evangelistic crusade through Sudan's White Nile region. Just one missionary went to Sudan, his first journey to the region. His guide could not accompany him. Little could be done to anticipate the needs of the mission. Yet, thousands of pagans, animists and Muslims heard the gospel of Christ. Over 7,000 accepted the message and were baptized. Hundreds more were healed and anointed.

For our second mission, we've got much bigger plans.

Our target is to bring the gospel to 100,000 people. Our plan has two parts:

Propigation: delivering the message to thousands of people so they can respond. Preaching will be done in public markets and large arenas where stadium-sized crowds can gather. Journeys will be made to tiny, remote villages to meet tribal chiefs. Pagans, Muslims, peasants and judges will be told in compassion the Good News of Christ and invited to respond.

Education: specifically, education. We're building our first schoolhouse in 2010. Sudan has been the victim of a war of over two decades, during which time, many schools were demolished. Children meet under trees during for school during the few months that aren't too rainy. They may or may not have a chalkboard. Sudan has one of the worst literacy rates in the world. Even if people had Bibles, they would not be able to read them. But just a few thousand dollars can build a public school where children can learn and grow. The schools can be filled with both math books and Bibles, ensuring that villages have ongoing access to the gospel, as well as have the ability to read them, and improve their lives. We want to start building those schools that children so desperately need.

Who knows what opportunities God will present after our second mission?

The goal is high, but the stakes are higher. At the brink of both modernization, and abject poverty; self-determination and slavery; Christianity and paganism: Africa must be saved.

Who We Are

Save Africa isn't a huge organization. In fact, it's made up of just a few people. We have no full time employees, no overhead costs (other than this website). We just have the freedom and flexibility to go where there is an opening for the gospel.

It takes a lot of work and support at home and abroad to send even one missionary on a campaign. Save Africa is blessed to be connected with many pastors, missionaries, evangelists and native Sudanese overseas and here in the U.S. who provide us with guidance, hospitality and prayers. Virtually no work could be done without the efforts of these many people.

Phil Appling is an ordained minister with over 30 years experience. He spearheaded the Save Africa mission with a solo crusade through Sudan’s ‘White Nile’ region. He works as a pastor and college professor at home in the Midwest. He is the head evangelist of the Save Africa mission.

Matt Appling is an ordained minister, as well as a teacher and graphic designer. Levi's House is a house church in Kansas City, Missouri, founded in 2007. As a small group of families, the church has committed itself to making a truly significant mark in overseas mission work. Leaders from the church provide direction to the mission, handle the finances, and pray together for God's leadership.

How can such a tiny church look so far away from home and have the audacity to dream of doing something so big? When Goliath threatened the Israelite army day after day, God had his pick of warriors to use to bring glory to His name. He chose a teenage shepherd boy, David, not even strong enough to move while wearing a man's suit of armor. That 130 pound teenager did what was seemingly impossible for God.

It's just like God to pick the least likely, the smallest, the weakest, the least among the flock to bring glory to Him.

That's how we can do it.

Do Something

Sure, we've got a missionary and support team, as well as a sponsoring church and help in the field. But what can you do?

First, please pray sincerely for us. Pray for God's will to be done in the Sudanese region. Pray for an awakening among thousands of hearts.

Second, you can keep in touch with us so we can update you on the progress of the mission. We've learned that flexibility is important and God may open new doors, while others close. If you'd like an update once in a while, get on our email list! Just send us an email with 'mailing list' in the subject line at SaveAfrica2009@gmail.com.

But how much does it actually cost to bring one African to Christ?

American churches can spend hundreds on outreach, and be pleased when a new family or two join their ranks. Like everything in Africa, even salvation is cheap.

It costs just $2.00 for us to bring one African to Christ.

If God is leading you to partner with us financially, you can make a donation via Paypal. Your partnership will help pay all the expenses of the mission - traveling, building schools, sending Bibles. So think of it this way - every two bucks you send, that's another African you helped become a Christian! We're a registered non-profit group, so your donations are tax-deductible too.

PayPal coming soon!
Finally, you can tell others about us. We've got T-shirts and other fun goodies that help you tell your friends and churches about us. Plus, all the proceeds go toward the mission! Wear your T-shirt to church or your small group, bring your coffee mug to work.
